Penguins Power Play Paces 4-2 Win Over Flyers
Philadelphia Flyers 2, Pittsburgh Penguins 4

(Pittsburgh, PA) – The Pittsburgh Penguins scored four times on the power play, including two by Sidney Crosby, en route to a 4-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night at Mellon Arena.

The Flyers remain in eighth place in the Eastern Conference with 91 points, but now trail Boston by one point for seventh place after the Bruins lost in a shootout to the New Jersey Devils. The Washington Capitals, battling for first place in the Southeast Division with Carolina, are just one point behind Philadelphia with two games remaining.

Philadelphia concludes its season with two home games; Friday night against the Devils and Sunday afternoon in a rematch with the Penguins.

“We have to take advantage of our two last home games,” said Mike Richards. “We still know that we hold our fate in our hands.”

“Obviously it is in the back of our minds, but we really can't do much about it,” said Jeff Carter of the teams they are battling with for a playoff berth. “We just have to go out and worry about our game, and hopefully come out with two points every night.”

The Penguins took the lead for good with the only two goals of the second period.

First, Pittsburgh was awarded a full two-minute two-man advantage with penalties to Braydon Coburn and Scott Hartnell at 6:07. It wasted little time tying the game at 2-2 when Crosby blasted in a one-timer from the bottom of the circle 19 seconds after the faceoff.

The penalties to Coburn and Hartnell came after the referees failed to notice Sergei Gonchar butt-ending Hartnell behind the Pittsburgh net, leaving the Flyers forward’s face bloodied.

The Flyers killed off the backend of the five-on-three of the power play after Crosby’s first goal, but Evgeni Malkin found Martin Biron’s five-hole on a partial breakaway at 14:33. The go-ahead score came shortly after Sami Kapanen nearly gave the Flyers back the lead with a tip-in attempt on a shorthanded rush that was stopped by Marc-Andre Fleury.

Fleury preserved the lead with some good saves on a blast from Coburn and an attempt at the near the crease by Joffrey Lupul, among others. He finished with 27 saves to pick up the victory.

Crosby all but ended the game with an impressive tip-in goal with just 1:34 left in regulation, again on the power play.

In an action-packed first period, the Flyers came out with a 2-1 lead.

First it was Hartnell, when Danny Briere spotted him open with a pass through the slot for the winger’s 24th goal of the season at 8:58.

The Penguins tied the game on a Gonchar power play goal at 10:24 but Philadelphia responded when Carter batted in a loose puck in front of the crease on a Flyers power play at 13:13.

“We battled hard and came out the way we wanted to,” said Hartnell.

As the seventh of eight meetings between the two clubs, the animosity between the rivals was evident from the start of the game. Riley Cote and Georges Laraque dropped the gloves early on, and later Lupul fought Pittsburgh defenseman Brooks Orpik immediately following Carter’s goal.

Crosby was also the recipient of some shots from the Flyers, as Hartnell hit him at the side of the net on a scrum in front of Martin Biron, and Lasse Kukkonen did the same later in the first. Kukkonen and Crosby were issued coincidental minors after tussling behind the net.

Biron suffered the loss with 25 saves.
