TORONTO (AP) _ Tie Domi knows frustration when he sees it. And the Toronto Maple Leafs' tough guy was happy it was the Philadelphia Flyers' turn to display some.

Using a gritty style that helped them rekindle their sputtering offense, the Maple Leafs struck back with a 4-1 win Wednesday night. The victory closed the Flyers' lead to 2-1 in the best-of-seven second-round playoff series, which resumes with Game 4 at Toronto on Friday.

Domi was encouraged by how the Flyers lost some of their poise by physically going after the Maple Leafs in a chippy third period. It was uncharacteristic for what had been a disciplined Philadelphia team that, in needing only five games to eliminate New Jersey in the first round, had won six of its first seven playoff games.

``Well, they haven't been in this situation in the playoffs yet,'' Domi said. ``When they come up against a little adversity, and they're down a few goals, they haven't dealt with that yet.

``It was nice to get that win, and hopefully we'll come back here and get that same emotion going.''

Alexander Mogilny led the way, scoring a pretty breakaway goal that sparked a three-goal second period, and also provided a surprising physical presence that established the tone for a desperate Leafs team.

Known more for his playmaking, Mogilny delivered several big hits, including one on Danny Markov in the first period that forced the Flyers defenseman to limp off the ice. Mogilny's physical play spurred a shoving match in the third period with Jeremy Roenick that led to both earning roughing penalties.

Philadelphia's Marcus Ragnarsson also took exception to Mogilny, and paid for it. Darcy Tucker scored Toronto's fourth goal on a two-man advantage in the third period, seven seconds after Ragnarsson was penalized for slashing following a two-handed chop on the back of Mogilny's legs.

Mogilny shrugged it all off as being ``playoff hockey.''

But Mogilny's performance was not lost on Domi.

``It's nice to see him play with emotion,'' Domi said. ``He's our game-breaker for us.''

Tony Amonte scored the lone goal for the Flyers, who had a four-game winning streak snapped, a stretch in which they outscored their opponents 11-3.

Now it's the Flyers' turn to bounce back.

``I just think our intensity level dropped and Toronto's went up, and that was the difference,'' Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock said. ``They've pushed their level up there.

``This is going to be a four-line series packed with intensity and physical play, and you had just better get used to it.''

Roenick agreed.

``Some of their guys that didn't show up in Philadelphia had a bigger backbone tonight,'' Roenick said. ``But you have to give them a lot of credit. They were under the gun.''

Philadelphia failed to score the first goal for the first time in this postseason.

Alexei Ponikarovsky and Chad Kilger also scored, sparking a Leafs offense that managed just 16 goals in its previous nine playoff games.

Mogilny opened the scoring five minutes into the second period on a breakaway, set up after Mats Sundin stripped Alexei Zhamnov of the puck in the Toronto end.

``It's big,'' Mogilny said of the victory. ``What do you think? We come home down 2-0. We lose this game, it's pretty much over. We knew what was at stake.''
