Flyers, Hurricanes seek first win
Philadelphia Flyers vs. Carolina Hurricanes

FLYERS (0-2-0) at HURRICANES (0-1-0)

Season series: The Philadelphia Flyers won all three games against the Carolina Hurricanes last season, scoring five goals twice and four once, allowing three goals in each.

Big story: Neither team made the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season, and as brand-new Metropolitan Division rivals they likely will be chasing the final one or two Eastern Conference berths in 2013-14.

Team Scope:

Flyers: Philadelphia, which started last season 0-3-0, will try to avoid duplicating that, having been outscored 7-2 in two losses this season.

The Flyers do not have an even-strength goal, and were shorthanded nine times in a 4-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.

"It's tough to score when you're in the box," Max Talbot told the Sports Xchange. "I think tonight you've got to look at the discipline and it was a factor. We started playing with a little bit of tempo and momentum and then we'd get a two-minute [penalty], so we've got to clean that up. I think that's the main thing right now."

Steve Mason, who started the season-opening 3-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday, likely will be in net after Ray Emery lost to the Canadiens.

Hurricanes: Carolina will look to take advantage of a team that played Saturday night and arrives in Raleigh for a 5 p.m. faceoff.

"We have to come ready to play tomorrow night and just jump on them," forward Jiri Tlusty told the Hurricanes website Saturday. "It's hard to play back-to-backs at the start of the season, so we have to take advantage of that and play as hard as we can."

The Hurricanes were 17 seconds away from a season-opening win against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday before losing in overtime, 3-2.

"It's OK. It's a little learning curve," coach Kirk Muller said. "We gave up a point, which we're not happy about, but for playing our first game, the jitters at home and playing a good team, I thought there were a lot more positives than negatives."

That compelled Muller to keep the lines in tact at practice Saturday.

"I thought the pairings were good last night," Muller said. "We'll watch Philly tonight and see what kind of lineup they have. We'll make some decisions in the morning based on what we feel we want to do here, what's best for us and what kind of lineup we're matching up with."

Who's hot: Vincent Lecavalier scored his first goal for the Flyers on Saturday. … Hurricanes forward Nathan Gerbe had a goal and team-high five shots Friday.

Injury report: The Flyers have no injuries. … Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu (lower body) is a week away from returning. Defenseman Tim Gleason (upper body) is out.
