Brodeur, Devils shut out slumping Flyers

NHL.com | Friday, 11.08.2013 / 2:50 AM

The New Jersey Devils wasted little time Thursday to score on the Philadelphia Flyers.

Adam Henrique's goal 1:57 into the first period ended a long drought, and the Devils avenged a Flyers shutout from Saturday with a 3-0 win of their own at Wells Fargo Center.

Henrique deflected a long shot from the point by Eric Gelinas to end a Devils scoreless streak that had reached 151:03, including a 1-0 loss to the Flyers at Prudential Center five days earlier.

"It had been, what, seven periods, and I think regardless of what you say, that seed's planted in the back of your mind," Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. "So to get a break early like that I think really relieved a little bit of pressure and I think we played a real good road game."

Martin Brodeur made 22 saves for his first shutout of the season and 122nd of his career. His past three have come against the Flyers, giving him 12, his most against any team.

"I think offensively everybody knows we've been having some trouble, but we played well today, we played really well defensively," Brodeur told MSG Network. "What we worked on offensively kind of worked. We got a few chances and got some tips and some screens on [Ray] Emery and finally were able to close it at the end."

It was a game befitting two of the three lowest-scoring teams in the NHL (along with the Buffalo Sabres).

"It was almost like a mirror game of the game we played [Saturday]," Brodeur said. "There was not much going on. ... There were not many chances, but this time around we won."

Philadelphia (4-10-1) has scored two goals in four games and has two or fewer in 14 of the 15.

"I've got to get them to play better, that's my job," Flyers coach Craig Berube said, according to The Associated Press. "It's not a hard game. It's about competitiveness and a will to win and to do all the little things right to win."

The Devils (4-7-4), shut out 3-0 by the Minnesota Wild on Sunday, got their second goal from Cam Janssen, his fourth in 313 NHL games.

Janssen's forecheck created a loose puck that wound up with defenseman Adam Larsson at the point. The defenseman's shot was deflected by Janssen and hit off Andrej Meszaros' skate before getting past Emery, who kept the Devils scoreless on 14 shots Saturday.

"You get a good dump-in, then you can get in on the forecheck, and everything starts from getting the puck out and getting it in deep," Janssen told MSG Network. "... I just got a piece of it; it was awesome, I mean, what a feeling, my gosh. So that's what it feels like."

Henrique scored on the second shot against Emery on Thursday. Mattias Tedenby created a turnover behind the Philadelphia net, and Michael Ryder sent the puck around the boards to Gelinas. His shot was redirected by Henrique between the faceoff circles for his fifth goal of the season.

Jaromir Jagr scored into an empty net with two seconds to go. Emery made 22 saves.

Janssen was recalled from Albany of the American Hockey League on Wednesday. His goal was his first in the NHL since March 30, 2011, when he was with the St. Louis Blues.

"I've played in the NHL for a long time, I've played a lot of games, and you just kind of have to take a deep breath and say, 'Just go do what you do,'" Janssen said. "... Let's go out and just keep everything simple and everything will come, and just work hard."
