Philadelphia Flyers 7, St. Louis Blues 2 FINAL

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Five goals showed why the Flyers stand atop the NHL on the power play.

Mark Recchi scored two of Philadelphia's power-play goals, helping the Flyers win for just the second time in 11 games, 7-2 over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night.

The Flyers, 2-3-3-3 in their last 11 games, were dominant with an extra man. They scored five goals in eight power-play chances against the Blues to pad their season power-play totals to 37 goals in 150 chances.

"We put it all together tonight," Recchi said. "We've been close. We really moved the puck well. The power play was terrific tonight. We recovered pucks, and that really hems a team in. We wore their penalty killers down."

The Blues have allowed 11 power-play goals at home this season; St. Louis ranks first in the league, killing 71 of 82 penalties.

"Sometimes, the puck goes in," Blues center Doug Weight said. "It's an ugly loss."

St. Louis is 0-2-0-2 in its last four home games against Philadelphia. This is the only meeting between the teams this season. Last year, the clubs split two games, each team winning on the road.

"This was a very big win," Recchi said. "For a team we only play once or twice a season, there was a lot of emotion out there. It was a fun game to be a part of. Obviously, we won, but there was a lot of intensity out there. We needed this win."

Philadelphia scored three power-play goals in the second period for a 4-1 lead.

Tony Amonte got the puck at the right side of the net and backup Blues goalie Brent Johnson went down on the ice. Amonte roofed the puck over the flopped Johnson to put Philadelphia ahead 2-1.

The Flyers scored their third goal on 13 shots when Joni Pitkanen got a power-play goal on a soft wrist shot from the slot. The Blues then pulled Johnson in favor of Reinhard Divis.

Philadelphia scored its third power-play goal of the period when Recchi beat Divis with 18.9 seconds left. Weight was called for elbowing Simon Gagne, who lost his helmet on the hit, and just 28 seconds into the man advantage, Recchi scored when he sent a low wrist shot through Divis' pads. It came on the sixth shot Divis faced.

"We've got great depth," Flyer center Keith Primeau said. "We're able to roll four lines out there. When you can establish a lead against St. Louis, they tend to rely a lot on a handful of guys to do things offensively.

"We match up well with a lot of teams in the league. We're hard to play against when we have the lead."

The Flyers scored twice during a two-man advantage in the third period. Recchi connected at 5:43 and Jeremy Roenick scored at 6:11 for a 6-1 lead. Roenick later scored an even-strength goal on a high slap shot from the top of the slot.

The Blues complained about Philadelphia coach Ken Hitchcock sending out its top power-play unit late in the game.

"I think we were a little upset," Weight said. "We saw a lot of Roenick, a lot of Amonte and a lot of (John) LeClair and a lot of Recchi. Hitch is a great coach. I disagree with it."

Hitchcock said he was unconcerned.

"They can whine all they want. I don't really give a darn, to be honest with you," Hitchcock said. "You know what, I have three units. I was rolling lines. We have three units and we use all three."

Scott Mellanby scored the final St. Louis goal on a power play.

Earlier Tuesday, St. Louis recalled Divis under emergency conditions from Worcester, the St. Louis affiliate in the American Hockey League. St. Louis scratched starting goalie Chris Osgood before the game with a right knee contusion. Osgood was hit by a puck during Monday's 3-2 victory over the Blue Jackets in Columbus.

The Blues scored 8 seconds into a first-period power play. From the top of the right faceoff circle, Keith Tkachuk one-timed a pass from Weight past goalie Robert Esche.

The Flyers tied the game just 1:58 later. Donald Brashear lifted the puck over a sprawled Johnson from the left side of the goal.
