Zac Rinaldo was chosen 178th overall and has solidfied his spot in the Flyers lineup in the last three years as a key role player.

Find some soldiers in the later rounds. More on this tomorrow, but since selecting Patrick Sharp in the third round in 2001, all the Flyers have to show on their current roster for their 86 picks from the second round on is Zac Rinaldo, a No. 6 in 2008. The only other Flyer second-round-or-later choice in the last 14 drafts even in the league is Boston’s Dennis Seidenberg, whom Philadelphia selected in a fifth round.

Because Seidenberg is a defenseman, he is an even great anomaly: The most recent Flyers drafted defenseman to represent them in an All Star Game was Behn Wilson in 1981.

The arrival of Shayne Gostisbehere, a No. 3 in 2012, figures to end the Flyers’ drought of both sleepers and home grown defensemen. And actually, despite the blueline being the area of greatest concern on the Flyers’ parent roster, the position that Hextall mentioned Tuesday as the thinnest in the organization is left wing. When James van Riemsdyk was traded to Toronto for Luke Schenn, the last Flyers’ left wing draft to stick with them through the prime of his career resumed being Todd Fedoruk.

“It doesn’t mean necessarily we’ll take a forward, but there are more forwards this year,” said Hextall Tuesday. “It’s a little weak (in depth) back on D, but that probably means a few of the D will get pushed up too.

“But, I think there’s a fair chance that we could get a top-six (caliber) forward.”
