With Flyers training camp set to get underway later this month, here's a quick recap of the
trades, additions and news from the 2014 Flyers Summer...

May 7
In a press conference held at the Wells Fargo Center, Flyers chairman Ed Snider announces that the club has promoted Paul Holmgren to Team President and names Ron Hextall the new General Manager.

May 16
Flyers defenseman Erik Gustafsson signs a deal to play in the KHL (the Flyers would later issue a qualifying offer on June 30 to retain his rights)

June 4
The Flyers reach an affiliation agreement with the Reading Royals of the ECHL. The agreements puts the Flyers and both development teams in the state of Pennsylvania within an 75 mile radius with the first season of their AHL affiliate, the Phantoms, moving to Lehigh Valley.

June 11

The Flyers sign 6-0, 196 pound forward Pierre-Edouard Bellemare to an NHL contract. The 29-year-old forward will appear in North America to play hockey for the first time after spending the last five seasons with Skelleftea of the Swedish Hockey League.

June 13
The Flyers sign defenseman Kimmo Timonen to a one-year contract extension. Timonen would later develop blood clots in his right leg and both lungs on Aug. 5, making his return to play undetermined.

June 18
The Flyers add former defenseman Gord Murphy to the coaching staff as an assistant coach.

June 23

The Flyers acquire forward RJ Umberger from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for winger Scott Hartnell. Hartnell spent the previous seven seasons with the Flyers, while Umberger returns to Philadelphia where he began his NHL career in 2005-06 through the 2007-08 season.

Also included in the deal for the Flyers is Columbus' fourth-round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

Later in the day, the Flyers announced a multi-year contract extension with center Brayden Schenn, who was a restricted free agent.

June 28-29

Set in Philadelphia for the first time in NHL History, the Flyers select defenseman Travis Sanheim of the WHL's Calgary Hitmen in the First Round, 17th overall in the draft.

With five more selections in the draft, the Flyers select forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel in the 2nd Round (48th overall) and defenseman Mark Friedman (86th overall) in the 3rd Round.

Rounding out their last three picks were two forwards: Oskar Lindblom (5th Round - 138th) and Radel Fazleev (6th Round - 168th) and one defenseman: Jesper Pettersson (7th Round - 198th)

June 30
The Flyers issue qualifying offers to four players: Jason Akeson, Erik Gustafsson, Brandon Manning & Tye McGinn.

July 1

The Flyers re-sign goaltender Ray Emery to a one-year contract. He returns to the Flyers for a second straight season and third in the last five years. He posted a record of 9-12-2 with a 2.96 GAA, .903 save percentage and two shutouts in 28 games in 2013-14.

The club also announced that they signed 6-1, 194-lb goaltender Rob Zepp to a one-year, two-way contract. Zepp spent the last seven seasons playing in Germany for the Berlin Polar Bears (Eisbaren Berlin) in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). He recorded a 2.32 GAA and .927 save percentage in 38 games last season.

GONE: Defenseman Bruno Gervais signs a one-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche. Gervais spent the last two years in the Flyers organization, posting 26 points (10g-16a) in 59 games with the club's AHL affiliate, the Phantoms, this past season.


July 2
The Flyers re-signed forward Jason Akeson to a one-year, two-way contract. The 23-year-old appeared in all seven games for the Flyers-Rangers series in the First Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, posting two goals and three points. Akeson also led the club's AHL affiliate, the Phantoms, in scoring for a third consecutive season.

The Flyers also picked up a third round pick from the San Jose Sharks, in the 2015 NHL Draft in exchange for forward Tye McGinn.

Flyers made a series of signings toward the end of the day… First, they inked defenseman Nick Schultz to a one-year contract. Schultz had five assists in 69 regular season games split between the Edmonton Oilers and Columbus Blue Jackets last year, and is a veteran of 880 NHL games.

The Flyers also signed RW Andrew Gordon to a one-year, two-way contract. Gordon helped the St. John IceCaps of the AHL reach the Calder Cup Finals last season, recording 57 points (23g-34a) in the regular season and 19 points (8g-11a) in the postseason.

The club also agreed to terms with 6-4, 232-lb forward Zack Stortini on a one-year, two-way contract. The 28-year-old spent 2013-14 with the Norfolk Admirals (Anaheim Ducks' affiliate) where he posted nine points (4g-5a) to go along with a league-leading 299 penalty minutes.

GONE: The Pittsburgh Penguins signed forward Steve Downie to a one-year contract. Downie posted 17 points (3g-14a) in 51 games with the Flyers in 2013-14.

July 4
It was a happy 4th of July for the Minnesota native, Chris VandeVelde, who the Flyers signed to a one-year, two-way contract. He played 18 regular season games in 2013-14 with the Flyers recording one assist and six penalty minutes.

GONE: The Carolina Hurricanes signed center Ben Holmstrom to a one-year, two-way contract. He was a member of the Flyers organization for the last four seasons and served as captain of the Phantoms the last two years.

GONE: The Washington Capitals signed forward Kris Newbury to a one-year, two-way deal. He appeared in four regular season games for the Flyers last season, recording one assist.

July 14
Nearing the end of Development Camp, the Flyers inked 2014 draft pick, Jesper Pettersson to an entry-level contract.

July 31

The Flyers announced the latest editions to their Hall of Fame.

Three legendary players of the 90s and 2000s will join the 20 members of the Flyers Hall of Fame to be inducted since 1988: Eric Lindros, John LeClair and Eric Desjardins.

Lindros & LeClair will be enshrined on Nov. 20 in a pre-game ceremony vs. Minnesota Wild, while Desjardins will enter on Feb. 19 when the Flyers take on the Buffalo Sabres at the Wells Fargo Center.

August 5

With the announcement of Kimmo Timonen's return to play undetermined due to blood clots, the Flyers signed Michael Del Zotto to a one-year contract. The 24-year-old blueliner recorded 16 points (3g-13a) in 67 games with Nashville and NY Rangers last season.

His career-best season came in 2011-12, when he posted 10 goals and 31 assists for 41 points in 77 games, while recording a plus-20 rating with the Rangers.

August 7
The Flyers sign 6-0, 201-lb center Ryan White to a one-year, two way contract. He posted six points (2g-4a) and 50 penalty minutes in 52 games for the Montreal Canadiens last season.

August 27
The Flyers sign defenseman Brandon Manning to a one-year, two-way contract. He enters his fourth season with the Flyers organization, appearing in 10 games for the team, recording two assists and a plus-5 rating.
