After selecting a forward in the second round, the Flyers moved back to their defensive mindset, selecting blueliner Mark Friedman with the 86th pick.

Friedman just concluded his second season with the Waterloo Black Hawks of the USHL.

He played a total of 51 games for the Black Hawks this past season, accumulating 10 goals and 30 assists.

Next year, the defenseman will move on to play NCAA hockey for Bowling Green.

Originally, Friedman was scheduled to begin his time with Bowling Green during the 2013-2014 year, but after a bit of a class credit related mix up, he played one more season with Waterloo.

Friedman attributes that extra year of junior hockey to his development as a player.

“I think I’ve become a more two way player,” Friedman said. “Before, I just relied more on my offense, and now I can really rely on my defense. I hope to bring a two way game.”

Overall, Friedman is described as an offensive defenseman and compares his style of play to that of Chicago Blackhawk Johnny Oduya.

“I’m a scoring defenseman,” said Friedman. “I like to join the rush, but I can also play defense so I know I can rely on all aspects of my game. Hopefully that’ll get me to where I want to be.”
