Flyers re-sign Timonen to one-year extension

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed 5-10, 194-lb D Kimmo Timonen to a one-year contract extension, according to general manager Ron Hextall.

Timonen, 39 (3/18/1975), will return for his eighth season with the Flyers. He was acquired from the Nashville Predators along with Scott Hartnell in exchange for Nashville’s first-round pick in the 2007 Entry Draft (previously acquired, Nashville selected Jonathon Blum) on June 18, 2007.

During his seven seasons with the Flyers, Timonen has won five Barry Ashbee trophies as the team’s best defenseman, including the last three in a row. He ranks second in team history behind Eric Desjardins, who won the award seven times. He has also made two of his five Olympic appearances with Finland during his time as a Flyer, winning bronze in both 2010 and 2014. He was recognized for his 1,000th career NHL game in March 2013.

Timonen appeared in 77 games for the Flyers in 2013-14, recording six goals and 29 assists for 35 points to go along with 32 PIM. He has appeared in 519 of a possible 540 games for the Flyers over the past seven seasons, never missing more than six games in a season and appearing in all 82 games in 2009-10 and 2010-11. During that time he’s posted 38 goals and 232 assists for 270 points.

Timonen ranks third all-time among Flyers defensemen in points (270) and assists (232), T-8 in goals (38, with Jim Watson), and 10th in games played (519).

In 1,092 NHL games with the Flyers and Nashville, Timonen has recorded 117 goals and 454 assists for 571 points. He was originally selected by Los Angeles in the 10th round (250th overall) of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft.
