Timonen-Grossmann out vs. Pens; Mason leaves game at Pittsburgh

UPDATED: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren announced after the second period that goaltender Steve Mason would not return to the Flyers-Penguins game due to an upper-body injury.

Ray Emery started the third period in place of Mason, who stopped 21 of 22 shots through 40 minutes.

Mason stayed on the ice for several minutes and was tended to by trainer Jim McCrossin, following a collision involving Penguins forward Jayson Megna who pushed Flyers defenseman Andrew MacDonald into Mason near the end of the second period.

========================================

Prior to face off, the Flyers announced that defensemen Kimmo Timonen and Nicklas Grossmann will both be out of the line-up at Pittsburgh.

Inserted in the line-up will be Erik Gustafsson and Hal Gill.

Gill will see his first action since Dec. 21 at Columbus, a span of 44 games and 112 days.

Gill has played in four regular season games this year, going scoreless while averaging over 13 minutes of ice-time per-game (13:10).

He is the Flyers' 2014 nominee for the NHL's Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy as selected by the Philadelphia chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association. The award is given annually “to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.”

Timonen misses his first game since Apr. 1 at St. Louis, and fifth game this season. He ranks second among Flyers defensemen in scoring with 33 points (5g-28a) in 76 games.

Grossmann misses his second straight game and third overall this season. He leads the Flyers with 174 blocks and has posted 13 assists and 14 points in 78 games.

With playoff positioning on the line today, the Flyers could secure the third seed in the Metropolitan Division and face off against the Rangers in the First Round with a win in regulation or overtime.
