The Flyers can clinch a berth in the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs with a win in any fashion tonight over the Florida Panthers… A win tonight would put the Flyers at 91 points on the season, putting them out of reach of both New Jersey and Toronto, both of which can only reach 90 points, as well as Washington, which can still reach 91 points but would finish behind the Flyers on the Regulation/Overtime win tiebreaker… Should the Flyers win and qualify, it would be the 37 time in the franchise's 46th season of play since 1967-68 that they will be in the Stanley Cup playoffs, including the 17th time out of the last 19 years… The Flyers have reached the Stanley Cup Final on eight occasions and reached the Conference Final on 16 occasions… As of today, the Flyers would face off against the NY Rangers in the First Round… It would be the 11th time the two teams would meet in the playoffs, but first time since 1997 when they met in the Eastern Conference Final in which the Flyers won, 4 games to 1.
The Flyers embark on a three-game, six-day road trip in which they will play twice in the state of Florida, where they are 0-2-0 this season and have gone 0-4-0 dating back to last season… The road has not been kind to the Flyers lately, losing three straight games and being outscored 8-3 in that span - the Flyers have not lost four straight games on the road since Dec. 7-21… Four of the last six road games have been one-goal games for the Flyers… The Flyers have killed off their last 19 penalties on the road dating back to Mar. 2, and have allowed just two power-play goals to the opposition in their last 10 road games, going 33-for-35… The Flyers are tied for second in the NHL in power-play goals scored on the road (32)… The Flyers own the NHL's best power play on the road (25.2%) and the NHL's second-best penalty kill on the road (85.8%)… Overall, the Flyers own a 16-15-7 mark on the road this season, including a 2-5-2 mark against the Atlantic Division on the road… Zac Rinaldo has been suspended by the NHL for four games - the Flyers own a 3-6-2 record when Rinaldo is not in the line-up this season.
The Flyers dropped the first meeting of the year at Florida, 3-1 on Nov. 25, and through two games in the season series, are 1-1-0 but have scored just three goals in the two games… Craig Berube won his first game as head coach of the Flyers and NHL against the Panthers on Oct. 8 this season… Eight different Flyers have registered a point in the season series, with no player earning more than one point… The Flyers have a much better record on the road (27-12-1-0) than they do on home ice (18-16-6-3) and prior to dropping their last game at Florida, the Flyers had won five straight against the Panthers in Sunrise… Florida was the last opponent and game the Flyers would play in their original home, the Spectrum - the Flyers dropped a 2-1 contest in overtime of Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal on May 12, 1996… The Panthers were also the first regular season opponent and game the Flyers would play to open their new building the following season, CoreStates Center, dropping a 3-1 contest on Oct. 5, 1996… Claude Giroux scored his first NHL goal against the Panthers at Florida on Jan. 27 on Tomas Vokoun.
