Flyers acquire Steve Downie: Send Max Talbot to Colorado in exchange for the former Flyer

The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired 5-11, 191-lb RW Steve Downie from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for C Max Talbot, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

Downie will wear uniform #9 for the Flyers.

Downie, 26 (4/3/1987), makes a return to the Flyers after a five-year absence.  He was originally drafted by the Flyers in the first round (29th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and joined the team’s American Hockey League affiliate, then the Philadelphia Phantoms, at the end of the 2006-07 season.  He split time between the Flyers and Phantoms until he was traded to Tampa Bay along with Steve Eminger in exchange for Matt Carle on November 7, 2008.

In 285 NHL games with the Flyers, Tampa and Colorado, Downie has 56 goals and 89 assists for 145 points, along with 696 PIM.  He appeared in 38 games for the Flyers during his first stop, including 32 in 2007-08 and six over the first month of the 2008-09 season prior to his trade.  He recorded six goals and six assists for 12 points, along with 84 PIM.

Talbot departs the Flyers after posting a goal and an assist in 11 games this season.  He signed with the Flyers as a free agent on July 1, 2011 and went on to post 25 goals and 21 assists for 46 points in 127 games.  In 515 career NHL games, Talbot has recorded 77 goals and 77 assists for 154 points, along with 408 PIM.

The Flyers return to the ice tomorrow night when they host the Washington Capitals at the Wells Fargo Center (7PM, CSN-HD, 93.3 WMMR).
