Opportunity knocks at Rookie Game

After an entire summer of workouts, development camp and skating with their teammates, the Flyers will take the ice tomorrow against the Washington Capitals.

That is, the rookie squad anyway.

Three days of camp are in the books and now it's time for the players to show what they have to the club's coaching staff and upper management, who will be in attendance at the Kettler Capitals IcePlex in Arlington, Virginia on Monday.

Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette will be behind the bench, leading the squad in the rookie game, while GM Paul Holmgren is also expected to make the trip.

"I think that there's no question that there's an opportunity here, "said Laviolette. "They're practicing in front of our organization everyday from the managers to the coaches."

The game will be streamed LIVE on PhiladelphiaFlyers.com for fans to enjoy beginning at 3 p.m.

They won't be the only ones ready for some hockey.

"It's been a long summer and I think all of the guys are anxious to get in a game-like scenario," said Brandon Alderson, who will be in the lineup on Monday. "I was looking at the Washington roster on the internet the other day to get a little look at their guys… because when I'm on the ice I like to see who I'm matched up against."

Flyers fans will also get to see the club's first round draft pick, defenseman Sam Morin.

Last year's first-round draft pick, Scott Laughton, hasn't had the chance to play in a Flyers rookie game due to the work stoppage last season. However he does have what only one other person in camp has - NHL playing experience.

"They're NHL coaches. You look up to them all of your life and you want to play for them someday. They know what they're talking about and you do what they say," said Laughton about working with Laviolette and the staff.

As far as the game, Laughton is looking to make an impact having been with the main club already.

"It's a pretty similar system." added Laughton. "I'm more comfortable on the ice with the coaches and knowing the system a little bit better than a lot of the guys."

Defenseman Matt Konan will also see action tomorrow, however unlike Laughton, Konan appeared in the final two games of the regular season where he averaged nearly 16 minutes of ice-time per game (15:55).

The full roster, including starting goalies, won't be made available until game day, but other players you can expect to see will be forwards Marcel Noebels, Nick Cousins, Taylor Leier and 2013 Draft Pick Tyrell Goulbourne.

On the blue line joining Konan and Morin, look for Maxim Lamarche and Mark Alt to wear the Orange & Black for the first time in their career.
