VOORHEES, N.J. – Danny Briere has been looking for positive steps in the past week. Monday might have been more of a positive leap.

After being sidelined for 15 days with a concussion, Briere took part in his first practice with the Flyers and reported that he’s doing better, although he is not yet ready to return.

“It’s been good. I’ve been skating on my own for a couple days and this was my first time skating with the team. It’s good to be back but I’m still not sure when I’m going to be back. It’s a step in the right direction.”

Briere said concussions are tricky in the sense that you are never quite certain when a good time to return might be.

But, he also added that the team’s situation and need for help from skilled players may also creep into a decision regarding concussions from time to time.

“I realize we’re in a tough position,” he said. “It’s a fine line finding the right time. The good thing is that I was at practice today getting to feel what it’s like with everyone skating around me.

“That’s the toughest part. You can do a lot on your own, but when your brain gets stimulated with everyone around and trying to be aware of where everyone is, or where the puck is, or that you’re not getting hit… all that stuff. That’s a step. It’s too early to say exactly where I’m at.”

Briere said he will definitely not play Tuesday against the Islanders, and while he wouldn’t say when he will return, he loves playing in Buffalo, and lo and behold the Sabres are on the schedule Saturday.

Not to mention, Briere missed the first game in Buffalo this season while recovering from a fractured forearm that he suffered while playing in Germany during the lockout.

So, that’s definitely a target for him. But there are steps to take before that comes to fruition.

“Practicing with the team is one thing, now we’ll see overnight how it goes,” he said. “I’m hoping that I feel as good as I feel right now. Then maybe I’ll be able to increase the workload – maybe get in some contact – and see how that goes.

“[As for Saturday,] I would hope so. That would be great. If everything keeps going the way it is now, there’s a chance.
