This Date in Flyers History: December 18

On this date in 1995, The Flyers acquired an expansion franchise in the American Hockey League to commence operations with the start of the 1996-97 season.

The Philadelphia Phantoms replaced the Hershey Bears as the Flyers’ top minor league affiliate.

The Phantoms won two Calder Cup titles (1998 & 2005) during their tenure in Philadelphia.

After the closing and demolition of The Spectrum, the franchise was sold in early 2009. The club has since moved to Glens Falls, NY and was renamed the Adirondack Phantoms.

2001
On this date in 2001, Flyers right wing Mark Recchi scored a goal in the Flyers’ 6-3 win against the St. Louis Blues at the First Union Center.

The goal was his 400th career NHL goal. He became the 65th player in NHL history to reach that Milestone.

Recchi played for the Flyers for 10 seasons in total (1991-95 & 1998-04). In his first stint with the team, he set the Flyers all-time single season scoring record with 53 goals and 70 assists for a 123-point season in 1992–93.
