Fans vote Hextall goal as most iconic 80\'s moment
The fans have spoken and the results are clear - Ron Hextall's famous goal is the winner of the most iconic Flyers moment of the 1980s.

Polls opened on Wednesday morning for fans to vote on which was their favorite Flyers moment of the 80s with the choices being: J.J. Daigneault's game-winning goal in Game 6 of the 1987 Stanley Cup Final at the Spectrum vs. Edmonton to force a Game 7, Flyers and Hockey Hall of Famer Bill Barber's 400th career goal (the only Flyer to have scored 400 goals) or Hextall's goal as their choices.

Hextall's goal garnered nearly 900 of the 1,100 approximate votes that were cast via social networks.

Hextall made history on December 8, 1987. With 1:12 left in regulation, the Flyers were protecting a two-goal lead which came at the hands of three unanswered goals in the third period against the Boston Bruins.

The Bruins pulled goaltender Reggie Lemelin creating an opening for Hextall, who took a first attempt at the net but came up short.

A mere seven seconds later Hextall received a dump in from just past the red line from the Bruins defense and flung it towards and into the empty net.

The goal was the first in NHL history in which a goaltender shot a puck into the opposing net.

Later in his career, Hextall would post his second career goal on Apr. 11, 1989 at Washington Capitals to become the first goaltender in NHL history to record a goal in the playoffs.
