Alumni gather for Flyers Charities Golf Invitational

Tuesday, 06.26.2012 / 5:02 PM / News
Flyers defenseman Joe Watson just finished putting on the 5th green and enjoyed a few laughs with the foursome he was playing with.

Just in the background Rick Tocchet teed off on the 6th hole and after he tracked his ball, he shared more of the same laughs with his group.

That's what today was all about.

Watson, Tocchet and 42 other Flyers Alumni gathered for the Inaugural Flyers Alumni Golf Invitational at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, Pa. today.

All of the proceeds go toward Flyers Charities, a division of Comcast-Spectacor Charities which has contributed $25 million to charity since 1977, and while most think of the annual Flyers Wives Carnival as a big fundraiser, this first-year event is doing more than it's fair share to raise money.

Another charitable recipient of the day's events was the Business Leadership Organized for Catholic Schools (BLOCS), which is an independent scholarship organization that believes all children should have access to a high quality education in a safe and nurturing environment, regardless of race, religious belief or income. BLOCS raises funds so financially disadvantaged children in the Greater Philadelphia region have access to a results-driven education.

Not only does the event feature golf, there was a cocktail reception and dinner followed by an awards ceremony and silent auction.

And some of the prizes weren't just collector's items. The event featured some once in a lifetime experiences.

"I told them to auction off anybody that wanted to play with us to try and help raise some funds because I thought anybody would enjoy playing a round of golf with Gordie Howe," said Flyers and Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Mark Howe.

The day is also just as meaningful for the alumni themselves.

"For me it's kind of like walking into a rink except in the background instead of having ice, there's a putting green," added Howe. "There's a lot of familiar faces and people that you associate with for 30-35 years of my life and they're all good people. It's not often you get to see everybody. It's special for me because I have my dad here today, so it's nice to see some old faces."

Those old faces included The Big E - Eric Lindros (pictured below), Tim Kerr, Bob Clarke, Bob Kelly, Bernie Parent, Brian Propp, Jeremy Roenick, Don Saleski and the newest Flyer Alumnus Ian Laperriere.

"Honestly it's not cliche or cheesy, it's really exciting," said Tocchet. "Whether it's the old guys from the Broad Street Bullies days to the newer guys that you see… I haven't seen certain guys in 10-15 years so it's amazing you can see these guys once again and you just don't miss a beat."

The Philadelphia Flyers Alumni Association is an organization with membership consisting of national and global former Philadelphia Flyers players. Through the years, the Flyers Alumni Association has maintained a tradition of giving back to the Delaware Valley community.

"This Flyers Alumni, it's probably one of the strongest in the NHL," said Tocchet. "You have a good group of guys… all the guys who put this thing together, it's truly amazing that they get this group together and obviously Mr. Snider is a big part of it."
