NOT YOUR AVERAGE SHUTOUT
Through 65 minutes of play teams went back-and-forth, end to end on rushes and traded good scoring chances to no avail.The Flyers got the better of chances, 45 shots on net to the Islanders 18, three power-plays including one at the end of the second period that stretched in the third period. In that third period and overtime, the Flyers out-shot the Islanders by a 20 to 4 margin. But still nothing went in. Islanders' goaltender Evgeni Nabokov was up to the task each and every time. Likewise, Bryzgalov shut down the best that the Isles threw at him, which included a great post-to-post kick save on PA Parenteau who was on the receiving end of a 2-on-1 break with Frans Nielsen. "Yeah, I mean he played well, made the saves that he had to and we put a lot of shots in front of him," said Giroux of Bryzgalov. "He likes to get his room and he challenged a lot of shots. I think we got to do a better job of screening more." In the end, both goaltenders were recognized with a shutout, but Nabokov took home the victory by the slightest of margins by virtue of the shootout. The loss stings, but the complete game the Flyers played removed any remnants of the weekend in which the Flyers allowed 11 goals and came away with no points. "Well, I am happy with the effort," said Kimmo Timonen. "I thought we played a pretty decent 60 minutes. We had 45 shots or something and we had chances to score. Their goalie played really well. You always want to get two points but I am really happy with the effort we gave today." |
The last time the Flyers played a game that reached the shootout in a 0-0 tie was December 6, 2005 when the Flyers beat Calgary 1-0. It was just the second shootout the Flyers had ever participated in, and was their first-ever win. Ilya Bryzgalov recorded his 25th career shutout tonight by reaching the end of overtime without allowing a goal. He is just the third goaltender to reach that milestone in a Flyers uniform, joining Martin Biron and Bernie Parent. It’s Bryzgalov’s second shutout of the season. The Flyers are now 3-4-1 this season with 40 or more shots, and 8-9-2 over the last two seasons. This is the first time this season the Flyers have gone three consecutive games without recording a win. The Flyers had 86 attempts on net tonight – 45 SOG, 24 shots that were blocked, and 17 that missed the net. Scott Hartnell had 12 of those attempts (6/4/2), Claude Giroux nine (6/1/2) and Jaromir Jagr eight (4/1/3). Per the Elias Sports Bureau, the Flyers’ 45 shots tonight were the second-most in a shutout loss in franchise history. The record is 48 shots on February 15, 1969 in a 3-0 loss to Chicago. 
Despite the loss, Bryzgalov stopped every shot he faced, 18 in total, to secure an important point in the standings for the Flyers. Bryzgalov also walks away with his 25th career shutout, which is an NHL Milestone achievement. |

Tonight's turning point came in the shootout. With the game scoreless through 65 minutes, Frans Nielsen set the tone for the shootout right away by executing a flawless move to give the Islanders the early advantage in the shootout. Nielsen faked a shot, deked to his backhand and roofed it over the glove of Bryzgalov. Down the other end of the ice, Nabokov shut the door on both Flyers in the shootout to preserve the victory and steal a full two points for the Isles, who have earned points in eight of their last nine games. |
