Beam me up Scottie!
Scott Hartnell was going through a list in his head of all the hits, scrums and penalties he accumulated in the last few games when he heard his phone ring and saw caller ID - Brendan Shanahan.

"I was kind of nervous [because] it was from Shanahan and I thought I might have had a disciplinary hearing, but it was good news on this phone call."

Not just good news, great news.

The NHL's disciplinarian wasn't calling to issue a suspension, he was calling to tell Hartnell he's been named to the 2012 NHL All-Star Team.

"I'm obviously really really excited. I didn't know if I was going to get the call or not. Unfortunately some guys have to get hurt and take some time off. It'll be a pretty cool experience. It'll be my first All-Star Game and my family is all going to be there, so it'll be a really nice weekend."

Flyers fans have been clamoring for Hartnell to be added ever since the final roster was announced. No one can deny that he is a well-deserved All-Star, and his numbers do the talking.

In his 11th season in the NHL, Hartnell has already posted 25 goals, which is five shy of his career-high (set also with the Flyers in 2008-09). He currently leads ALL NHL players on the power play with 13 tallies, and among the NHL's Top 30 goal-scorers this season, owns the best shooting percentage (19.8).

He is also 16 points shy of surpassing his career mark for points in a season (60) also set in the 2008-09 season. Hartnell currently sits at 44 points with 35 games left to play.

As Hartnell changes his plans from Las Vegas to Ottawa, he won't have to travel alone. He'll be joined by good, long-time friend Kimmo Timonen as well as Claude Giroux and rookies Matt Read and Sean Couturier.

All-Star weekend kicks off on Thursday with the NHL's Fantasy Draft. The annual Skills Competition and All-Star Game will take place on Saturday (7 p.m.) and Sunday (4 p.m.) respectively from Scotiabank Place in Ottawa.
