THE ROOKIES TAKE CHARGE
In the midst of a little scoring drought, and by little we mean three measly games, the Hartnell-Giroux-Jagr line took a back seat to the kids in the Flyers' 2-1 victory over the Hurricanes.

This certainly isn't the first game that the rookies have impressed. Marc-Andre Bourdon, Matt Read and Sean Couturier scored in the Flyers loss to Ottawa two nights ago, but tonight Couturier and Brayden Schenn each scored and the team hung on for a victory.

"Sean's played really well all year," said Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette. "I don't think anybody should be mistaken about his offensive abilities because we use him on penalty kills and on the fourth line. He's a really talented guy."

Couturier now has recorded points in three of his last four games including goals in two straight. His goal tonight was his first game-winning-goal of his NHL career.

Rookie Harry Zolnierczyk provided the assist on Couturier's goal, while rookie Brayden Schenn got the Flyers on the board first, going hard to the net and banging home a rebound from Wayne Simmonds early in the second period.

Schenn now has points in four of his last five games, recording two goals and two assists.

That victory, by the way, was also head coach Peter Laviolette's 100th as the Flyers bench boss.
Peter Laviolette recorded his 100th win as coach of the Flyers.  He is 100-59-21 in his tenure for a .586 winning percentage.

Per the Elias Sports Bureau, Jerome Samson is the fifth player to score his first career NHL goal against the Flyers this year.

Tonight’s goal scorers for the two teams have combined for 10 career goals, none of which occurred before this season.

Claude Giroux took 29 of Philadelphia’s 65 face-offs tonight; he won 17 of them (59 pct).

The Flyers committed just two giveaways tonight to Carolina’s 10.  It’s the third game in the last six in which the Flyers have had two or fewer giveaways.

Jakub Voracek led all players with eight shots on goal tonight.

Sean Couturier
Rookie Sean Couturier gets tonight's first star for the Flyers after recording the game-winning goal and his second tally in his second straight game.

Couturier picked up the puck just past the blueline after Harry Zolnierczyk partially blocked the Hurricanes pass attempt.

Coming down the right wing on Hurricanes' goaltender Cam Ward, Couturier fired a rocket just over the blocker of Ward for his seventh goal of the year.

"Bob was sharp and he bailed us out a couple times. I thought we did a good job taking care of our end early on. There weren't a lot of scoring chances 5-on-5, so we tightened things up."
- Peter Laviolette

"I think it's nice that there's a few of us in the same position as rookies and it's fun to have a bunch of people in the same boat and we're just trying to feed off each other and keep helping this team be successful down the road."
- Harry Zolnierczyk
Tonight's turning point isn't 3:23 into the third period when Sean Couturier scored the Flyers second goal which put them back into the lead.

It's the final 16:37 of time remaining following that goal that decided the game for the Flyers.

The Flyers held on to a slim one-goal lead to earn the victory and what's perhaps more impressive is that they did so without committing a penalty and giving the Hurricanes an opening in the game.
