NOT AGAIN...
In a night that could have been disastrous for the Flyers, Claude Giroux went up and down his team's bench and said 'It's not gonna happen again.'

'It' being the Flyers losing a third-period lead, and 'it' was on the doorstep of happening again after the Blackhawks scored back-to-back goals 25 seconds apart to go from a 4-2 deficit to a tied game with momentum on their side.

But Giroux stepped up and practiced what he preached and didn't let 'it' happen thanks to a great effort from their power-play unit with 33 seconds left in a tied, 4-4 game.

“Actually the person I heard the most on the bench moving up and down outside was Giroux saying it’s not going to happen again," said Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette. "It’s good when you hear your young players jumping in like that and taking charge."

Giroux fed the puck to Scott Hartnell down low, who in turn saw a cutting James van Riemsdyk out of the corner of his eye and fed it right on his stick to fire it past Emery.

Right from the beginning of the game the Flyers were playing with an edge, despite falling behind early.

The Flyers fired 13 shots in the first period and bettered that with a season-high 21 shots in the second period. Overall, the Flyers out-shot the Hawks, 46-34.

The Flyers won their ninth game in a row against the Blackhawks here in Philadelphia.  They have not lost to the Blackhawks in Philly during the regular season since November 9, 1996.

With his two assists tonight, Claude Giroux jumped back into a tie for the league lead in scoring with Henrik Sedin at 48 points.

The Flyers had 46 shots, their third-highest total of the season.  They had 21 shots in the second period, which is their highest amount of shots in any period this season.

The Flyers had no minor penalties in the game, the first time that’s happened since Feb. 20, 2011 at the New York Rangers.

James van Riemsdyk
Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk gets tonight's star for his two-goal effort, one of them coming in the form of a game-winning-goal with 33 seconds left in the game.

The two-goal effort was the fifth of his career and second of the year.

JVR also scored the Flyers' fourth goal of the evening after picking up a rebound in front of Chicago goaltender, and ex-Flyer, Ray Emery.

"It's always great to have a good shift after an opponent scores a goal to try and get the momentum back. The puck kind of got deflected and was up in the air and I whacked it out of the air and was able to go five hole."
- Scott Hartnell

"It's exciting to contribute. Some bounces haven't necessarily gone my way most of the year, but it feels good to contribute and help the team win."
- James van Riemsdyk
The turning point in tonight's game could have been several different time-stamps, but the one that sealed it was the four-minute high-sticking double minor that Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane took in the final two minutes of regulation.

Chicago successfully killed of the first 55 seconds of the penalty, but the work of Giroux-Hartnell-van Riemsdyk was too much for the Hawks in the end.

The penalty eventually led to JVR's game-winner with just 33 seconds remaining to give the Flyers two straight wins over Chicago in the last two years.
PIC OF THE NIGHT: Zac Rinaldo drops the gloves with Andrew Shaw in the 1st period.

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - James van Riemsdyk's second goal on the power play with 32.8 seconds remaining lifted the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night.

Brent Seabrook and Patrick Kane scored 25 seconds apart late in the third period to tie it, but van Riemsdyk made sure the Flyers shook off the disappointment from their Winter Classic loss.
