SPREADING THE WEALTH
With a multitude of storylines for tonight’s 9-2 Flyers victory over the Blue Jackets, one that might get overlooked is the fact that the Flyers received eight goals by eight different players.

That has happened four other times in Flyers history; the most recent of which came nearly 30 years ago. The last time was an 8-5 victory on Oct. 23 at the Spectrum against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Sean Couturier was the only Flyer to record more than one goal. His pair of goals was the first two-goal game in his young NHL career.

Other contributors in tonight’s contest include 15 of the 18 players that dressed for the Flyers tonight (minus goaltenders) that all recorded at least a point.

Seven of those 15 players posted multi-point games, while the same number of players had a plus-minus rating of +2 or better, highlighted by rookie defenseman Erik Gustafsson at +6.

"I think it was just nice to come out and play well," said Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette. "Like I said, I think from the start we did the right things, pucks went in the net and I think more than anything we wanted to play the game the right way and because of that you get results you're looking for."

Rookies have been a key factor through the first 13 games of the year. Coming into tonight the Flyers rookies have combined for 20 points, while in tonight’s game they added another five (2G-3A).

The Flyers also owned the NHL’s top spot with the most offensive production coming into the game with 47 goals and have now extended that lead by recording 56 goals thus far on the season.

* Five different Flyers scoring a goal in a single game ties a franchise record.  This is the fifth occasion.  The last time was October 23, 1983 vs. Toronto in an 8-5 win.

* The last time the Flyers led a game 5-0 after one period was April 3, 2009 when they led Toronto 5-0 in an eventual 8-5 win.  The last time the Flyers led by 8 goals after the second period was October 18, 1984 vs. Vancouver, when they led 9-1 and won 13-2.

* Eric Gustafsson was plus-6 tonight… the last time a Flyers rookie was plus-6 or better in a game was March 30, 1984 when Thomas Ericsson, Rich and Ron Sutter were all plus-6.

* Last time the Flyers had nine goals in a game was Feb. 6, 1997 vs. Montreal.

Jakub Voracek
Jakub Voracek said on Friday that he wanted to show his former team that they made a mistake.

Posting a three-point night would certainly count as accomplishing that feat.

Voracek is tonight's star for recording a goal and two assists.

It is his first multi-point game as a Flyer and the three points also tie a career high for most points in a game.

"Things just seemed to be clicking out there.  I don’t know, we were making good passes up and down the ice and making smart plays with the puck.  When you do that it makes the game look a lot easier out there.”
- James van Riemsdyk

"I would say that. I'm really happy. It's been tough to play against my friends, but its a hockey game, and i was very excited for this game to come up, I'm really happy with my team."
- Jakub Voracek

"I haven’t been playing the way I should be playing the last few games. I just need to establish myself physically and get back to how I started playing in the beginning of the year.”
- Wayne Simmonds
Tonight’s turning point came pretty early in the contest. Max Talbot’s goal 13 minutes into the contests gave the Flyers a 3-0 lead and that’s all the Flyers needed as they cruised for the remainder of the game to a 9-2 game.

Former Blue Jacket Jakub Voracek had a hand in the goal by laying a beautiful pass on the tape of Talbot who was cutting to the net.

The Flyers went on to score six more times, however what’s more important is that the Blue Jackets tallied just two goals off of Ilya Bryzgalov, who stopped 33 of 35 shots in the victory.

PIC OF THE NIGHT: Jakub Voracek gets congratulated by his teammates for his first period goal.

Flyers 9, Blue Jackets 2
Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Claude Giroux and Jaromir Jagr scored during a five-goal first period, helping the Philadelphia Flyers rout the Columbus Blue Jackets 9-2 on Saturday night.

Sean Couturier scored twice for the Flyers and five other players had goals. James van Riemsdyk, Max Talbot and Jakub Voracek also scored in the first, giving Philadelphia three fewer goals (five) than total shots for Columbus (eight).

The Flyers piled on in the second, with Wayne Simmonds and Matt Carle scoring 20 seconds apart to make it 8-0. Blue Jackets goalie Steve Mason was yanked late in the first period after allowing three goals on 12 shots. Allen York gave up two goals on five shots and was replaced by Mason in the second.

For a game, at least, the Flyers were the big winners in the offseason trade that sent leading scorer Jeff Carter to Columbus. Carter is sidelined with a broken foot and has only three assists in five games this season. Philadelphia obtained Voracek, who had an assist during the first-period scoring rampage, and first- and third-round draft picks. The Flyers used their first-rounder on the 18-year-old Couturier and he already has five goals.
