Summer Stories: Danny Briere
For Danny Briere hockey is a way of life. And while he very much enjoys the rest and relaxation of summer, he doesn’t feel the need to completely shut himself off from the hockey world.

“I don’t feel like I need to get away,” said Briere. “Hockey’s my passion, it’s my life, it’s my job and I love what I do. I get away in the sense that I’ll take a little break physically from the game after your body takes a toll from a full season. Mentally you’re not at the rink every day and grinding it out, so that’s a big relief and you need that break in the summertime, but everyday I follow the news and see what’s going on in the hockey world because it’s a passion of mine.”

Well then you might ask - what does Danny do during the summer?

“I spent most of my summer back home, outside of Gatineau in Ottawa. My days consisted of golf and working out and then later in the summer I had the kids. They were in a few hockey camps so I would help out and go on the ice with them… I also spent a week with them and some friends down in the Bahamas.”

One very important event that Briere looks forward to during the summer is his annual Daniel Briere Classic, which features golf and poker tournaments, as well as a dinner show all benefitting his charity, which has been running for over seven years now.

“This was for the Daniel Briere Foundation in Canada. We’ve raised over $500,000 so far.”

Participants included Claude Giroux, Scott Hartnell, Matt Carle, James van Riemsdyk and Ian Laperriere.

“We had quite a few Flyers show up for that,” said Briere. “It was the ninth year we have been doing this and it turned out really well. We added the poker tournament this year for the first time and we’re hoping to grow it for the future.”

Beyond that, Briere will go through his normal off-season workout routine, but in recent years he’s had the added welcome of having his kids train along with him.

“Working out is something that I try to teach them to take care of their body and eat right. They see me workout all the time, it’s part of my job, and so a lot of times they like to get involved, but there are also limits on what I let them do. I don’t load up on a lot of weights. I like to teach them that working out is a good and healthy way of living, so the last couple years I introduced them to a couple workouts.”

And what is the best part of the summer time for Briere?

“For eight months we’re being told everyday to be here at this time and be here for a practice, meeting or game and you don’t have a lot of free time. I love the summertime where I can just wake up, workout when I want to work out and go golfing when I want to go golfing or do whatever I want. So that’s kind of nice, but even after you’ve had that for a few weeks, I’m now looking forward to getting back into that hockey mode.”

For Briere and the rest of the Flyers, 'that hockey mode' is back and just around the corner will be the official 2011 Flyers Training Camp.
