Flyers claim defenseman Nick Boynton
The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have claimed 6-1, 218-pound defenseman Nick Boynton off waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.  Boynton will wear #24.

“Nick is a right shot defenseman that will bring experience and depth to our team,” Holmgren said in making the announcement.

"I couldn't be happier," said Boynton. "I was a little shocked and didn't realize that I was put on waivers until late last night, but I couldn't ask to be coming to a better team or organization.
Boynton helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup over Philadelphia last season.

“I've been around the League for a while and I hope to bring that experience, try to work hard and play solid defense and chip in with whatever the team needs."

Boynton, 32 (1/14/79), is in his 10th full NHL season and made call-up appearances in two others.  He has played 595 career NHL games, posting 34 goals and 110 assists for a total of 144 points, along with 858 PIM.  He has a career plus-minus rating of +22.

Boynton was acquired by the Blackhawks at last year’s trade deadline and helped Chicago to its Stanley Cup championship last year.  He appeared in three playoff games, one of which was the clinching Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final.  This year with the Blackhawks, Boynton had a goal and seven assists for eight points in 41 games and was a plus-2.

Boynton was initially selected by Washington in the first round (9th overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, but re-entered the draft two years later and was selected again in the first round (21st overall) by Boston.  He played his first professional season in 1999-2000 under current Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette with the AHL’s Providence Bruins.

Boynton went on to spend parts of six seasons with the Bruins from 1999-2006.  He also played for Phoenix, Florida and Anaheim before coming to the Blackhawks last year.

Before turning pro, Boynton played five seasons for the Ottawa 67s of the Ontario Hockey League.  He led the team to the 1999 Memorial Cup as the host team and was named the MVP of the tournament.

The Flyers return to the ice tonight when they visit the Ottawa Senators at 7:00 PM (CSN-HD, 610 WIP).
