Prospects drop heartbreaker to Caps
It certainly looked like the Flyers’ were going to walk away with a victory for the second consecutive year in their annual prospect game with the Washington Capitals.

It was not, however, meant to be as the Caps scored the game-winning tally with 1:16 left in regulation to give the hometown crowd a 4-3 victory.

Trailing most of the way, including 3-1 with 15 minutes remaining in regulation, the Flyers prospects fought their way back to 3-2 with just over six minutes to go on a tally from Eric Wellwood, the club’s sixth round pick in 2009.

Less than two minutes later, Marc-Andre Bourdon, who was named captain of the prospect team minutes before they took the ice, rallied the Flyers and scored the equalizer with 4:30 to go.

“I think we started well. We got our legs moving and then their forwards started to get going and they took over momentum in the second,” said Bourdon. “In the third we started to get pucks towards the other end and we hit them hard.”

Starting in net for the squad was highly-touted Russian goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, who saw most of the action and faced a majority of the shots, playing the first two periods of the game.

“I was ready for shots from every angle today,” commented Bobrovsky through an interpreter when asked what he thought of North American hockey. “It wasn’t about shots today for me, it was about atmosphere. The whole atmosphere of being in this type of game was very exciting for me.”

Adam Morrison was the only Flyers goaltender who had experience playing against the Caps in the prospect game and took over for Bobrovsky in the third period.

“I expected it to be a little closer this year,” said Morrison. “I was a little nervous coming in there being down two goals, but I felt good about getting my legs into the game. I think that last goal I should have had, but it’s a tough way to end.”

Among the other Flyers who found the scoresheet were Ricard Blidstrand (the team’s seventh round draft pick this season), Tye McGinn (Flyers’ fourth round selection in 2010), Ben Holmstrom and Erik Gustafsson, both of whom were signed to future contracts this season, as did Mike Testwuide who provided an assist on Holmstrom’s goal.

The game marks the conclusion of rookie camp and paves the way for the official start of Flyers training camp, which will feature many of the Flyers prospects hoping to make the final roster of the big squad.
