Backlund, 28, appeared in just one regular season game with the Flyers last season, going 0-1-0 with a 3.00 goals-against average. He missed the final seven regular season games with a lower body injury. During the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Backlund served as backup in 15 of the Flyers’ 23 games and briefly saw action, appearing in 1:24 of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals vs. Boston. He also dressed, but did not play in eight games for the Flyers during the regular season.
He spent a majority of the 2009-10 season with the Flyers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms, where he recorded a 21-17-2 mark with a 2.79 goals-against average, .906 save percentage and posted two shutouts in 41 appearances.
A native of Skelleftea, Sweden, Backlund originally signed a one-year contract with the Flyers on March 26, 2009.
