(Voorhees, NJ) – Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren announced on Thursday that goaltender Ray Emery, who has been out with tightness in his left hip since he posted a 3-0 shutout in Calgary on Feb. 1, will be kept off of the ice for the next three weeks in the hopes he will recover shortly after the upcoming Olympic break.

“Based on what the doctors have told us, we’re just going to shut Ray down here for three weeks and give him some time to rehabilitate the hip, and then we’ll go from there,” Holmgren said Thursday from the Flyers’ practice facility.

“The idea of taking these three weeks to strengthen that [hip] area and the muscles around that area, we’re hoping will be the right way to go.”

The Flyers host Montreal on Friday and visit the Canadiens on Saturday before the NHL season is put on hold until March 2, when Philadelphia travels to Tampa Bay.

“It is 16 days where we are not playing games," said Holmgren. "I feel good about what we are doing with Ray. Based on the information we have right now, I think it is the right way to go for both the Flyers and for Ray."

Holmgren was asked if hip surgery for Emery was a possibility after the three weeks.

“We haven’t really gotten to that point yet. We’re just going to shut him down and do the rehabilitation route and see how it goes.”

Finally, Holmgren flatly denied the rumors that the Flyers are trying to make a trade for Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco, reports of which surfaced earlier this week. Michael Leighton, who is 10-3-1 with a 2.21 goals-against average and .925 save percentage as a starter for the Flyers, will likely continue to get the bulk of the work as long as Emery is on the shelf.

“I certainly feel confident in Michael right now. He’s done a good job for us,” said Holmgren.
