UPDATE: 10.28.2009 / 3:46 p.m.

(Philadelphia, PA) - Flyers forward Simon Gagne will fly to Canada tomorrow to get a second opinion on his injury, said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren during a conference call with the local media on Wednesday afternoon.

There is still no timetable for his return, although surgery is a virtual certainty and Gagne will miss significant time.

(Washington, DC) – Simon Gagne will be out of the lineup for an indefinite amount of time with a pair of hernias in his right groin, said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.

"Simon Gagne was examined today (October 27) by Dr. Alan Schurict from Pennsylvania Hospital after an ultrasound procedure (on October 26) found two small hernias in Simon's right groin area.

"Our medical staff will meet with Simon tomorrow afternoon (October 28) to discuss all options."

Gagne has a goal and four assists for five points in nine games this season.

Holmgren said that surgery is an option but not necessarily a certainty, and could not put a timeframe on how much time Gagne will miss. He also said that the injury is not related to his past hip or groin issues.

Gagne had hip surgery on May 28 of this year, and suffered a right groin strain at Team Canada’s preliminary Olympic camp in August.

“From my understanding, this is not related to what’s been done before,” said Holmgren.

Holmgren was asked if he is concerned that Gagne’s career is going to continue to be marred by injury. The two-time 40-goal scorer missed the majority of the 2007-08 season with a concussion.

“I think Simon takes care of himself. He’s a pro; he trains hard. I would like to believe that that’s not going to be the case,” he said. “Obviously, he’s also been through a lot, whether it’s his hip or his groin. We’ll just try to get through this process and get him back healthy.”

In the meantime, Riley Cote will take Gagne’s place in the lineup against Washington on Tuesday. The Flyers have not recalled anyone, partially due to the fact that Blair Betts, who has been out with a dislocated shoulder since October 6, could return in time for the team’s next game on Saturday afternoon against Carolina (1:00 p.m., CSN, Tickets).

Coach John Stevens was asked how he would help fill the void left by Gagne.

“A guy like [Claude] Giroux is probably going to get more offensive time on the power play than he maybe has, and James [van Riemsdyk] has had some time there,” said Stevens.

“[Mika] Pyorala has played better and better. [Dan] Carcillo has played better and better. [Arron] Asham has played well. I think we have a lot of guys that can play and take more minutes and get bigger contributions [from] with this opportunity.”
