(Voorhees, NJ) – James van Riemsdyk recorded four goals and added an assist, in leading the Philadelphia Flyers rookies to a 7-3 win over the Washington Capitals rookies at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone on Friday afternoon.

Van Riemsdyk, Philadelphia’s first round pick (second overall) in 2007, opened the scoring just 8:29 into the first period on a deflection from a shot by Kevin Marshall. He gave Philadelphia a 4-2 cushion with a tally in the second period, and capped the scoring with a shorthanded breakaway goal with 4:15 left in regulation.

He also had a beautiful set up on Rob Bellamy’s goal late in the first period, which gave the Flyers rookies a 2-1 lead at the break.

“I just wanted to come in today, compete, work hard and win battles,” said van Riemsdyk after the game. “Obviously, do the little things right.”

“I had some good chemistry with my linemates out there. They made it pretty easy for me out there.”

Also scoring for Philadelphia were Tomas Sinisalo, the son of former Flyer and current scout Illka Sinisalo, as well as Joonas Lehtivuori. Lehtivuori added two assists, as did Marshall and David Sloane.

In goal, Adam Morrison and Jacob Desseres each played half of the game. Morrison surrendered two goals on 15 shots, while Deserres stopped nine of 10.

The talk after the game though, was obviously about the club’s top prospect, who stood out among everyone else.

"He’s a young man who possesses, obviously, great speed. He reads and finds the holes so well," said Adirondack Phantoms coach Greg Gilbert. "James is one of those young men that has that ability to finish. He’s got a great shot and obviously the poise that he has going in on a breakaway there, some of the moves he put on, he’s going to score on a lot of goalies."

It's been a good week for van Riemsdyk after a summer of hard work.

“I actually put on more weight, more muscle. I wanted to hang in there with the bigger guys,” he said. “I wanted to do that and still keep my quickness. I worked here with [trainer] Jim McCrossin and the staff and did a great job getting me into shape."

The game marked the conclusion the 2009 rookie camp. Several of the rookies, including van Riemsdyk and Marshall, will take part in the main training camp beginning this weekend.
