Flyers Open 2009-10 Regular Season at Carolina on October 2

The Philadelphia Flyers will open their 43rd season in the National Hockey League at Carolina when they face off against the Hurricanes on Friday, October 2. Philadelphia will make its 2009-10 regular season debut at the Wachovia Center against the Washington Capitals on Tuesday, October 6. The 82-game regular season will conclude on home ice for the Flyers with the finale set for Sunday, April 11 vs. the New York Rangers.

2009-10 Regular Season Schedule

"The Flyers 2009-10 schedule is action-packed and includes terrific home match-ups with many of our key rivals and several opponents we haven't seen in Philadelphia in quite a while," said Flyers Senior Vice President of Business Operations Shawn Tilger. "There are also many different ticket packages available to accommodate all lifestyles and budgets which will enable all of our fans with opportunities to see Flyers hockey."

The NHL's Board of Governors approved a scheduling matrix which ensures that each Club will play every other Club a minimum of once per season for the second consecutive year in the 2009-10 season.

The NHL regular season schedule format still sees each Club play the teams in its own division a total of six times (three times at home; three times on the road) and a total of 24 division matchups. The Flyers compete in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference along with the New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins. The Flyers posted a 13-7-4 record against teams in the Atlantic Division in 2008-09.

The Flyers will also face off in four games (twice at home; twice on the road) against the remaining 10 non-division teams in the Eastern Conference, which consist of the five teams in the Northeast Division (Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs) and five teams in the Southeast Division (Atlanta Thrashers, Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals), bringing the total number of games in the Eastern Conference to 64 games. In 2008-09, the Flyers posted a 10-8-2 record against the Northeast Division, a 13-5-2 record against the Southeast Division and a 36-20-8 record against Eastern Conference foes.

Included within the Flyers' inter-conference schedule, the National Hockey League announced today that the league's annual outdoor game will return on New Year's Day with the Boston Bruins hosting the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park -- home of the Boston Red Sox -- in the 2010 Bridgestone/NHL Winter ClassicTM. The Eastern Conference rivals will face-off at 1 p.m., ET in the classic, which received the SportsBusiness Journal "Sports Event of the Year" award for its inaugural edition in 2008.

In addition to their Eastern Conference slate, the Flyers will play their remaining 18 games against opponents in the Western Conference with each Club playing the other conference team at least once, home or away. This also includes three remaining games designated as "at-large" games in which the Flyers will play three opponents in the Western Conference both home and on the road. The Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild and San Jose Sharks are the three "at-large" opponents the Flyers will face off at home and away this season. The Flyers posted an 8-7-3 against Western Conference opponents in 2008-09.

The following is a breakdown of the Flyers' home games by days of the week: Saturday – 21, Thursday – 14, Sunday – 11, Tuesday – 11, Friday – 9, Monday – 8 and Wednesday – 8. The Flyers 41-game home schedule will feature 13 regular season afternoon games.

The team's longest road trip comes when they make way for the winter Disney on Ice show at the Wachovia Center, which will take place from December 23 through January 3. The Flyers will hit the road for six games during that 12-day span, visiting Tampa Bay, Carolina, NY Islanders, NY Rangers, Boston (New Year’s Day) and Ottawa.
