Update: September 26, 7:45 p.m.

Philadelphia Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren and Head Coach John Stevens met with the media prior to Wednesday night's game with the Washington Capitals, to address the team's injury situation.

Below is a transcript of those interviews.

Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren

On the injuries:
“It’s disappointing but you have to deal with it. That's all we can do.

“It opens the door for a couple different things.  We still have some games to evaluate some guys, the young guys playing tonight that probably weren’t going to get a chance are going to get a longer look here now.”

On bringing back Claude Giroux:
“In order to do that it would have run out of forwards basically, put yourself in an emergency situation and we are not at that point yet.”

Is that a requirement?
”Yes. Once you loan him to a team you have to have a number of injuries before you can have an emergency recall situation and we are not at that point yet.”

On the rough start with injuries:
“R.J.’s not a long term thing and the hope is Lupul is not.  Upshall obviously is concerning because the bone in his wrist.  It’s a navicular bone and that’s generally a bone that is iffy in terms of how it heals because of the blood flow that gets into that area.  We feel we have some depth at the forward position and we are going to tap into it, I guess.

What happened on the injuries?
“I don’t know what happened to Joffrey.  With Scottie Upshall it was late in the third period and he got a pass in the neutral zone and as he was reaching for it Ottawa’s defenseman just stepped up on him and kind of jammed his wrist awkwardly.  I think it was with about three minutes left.  I think he played another shift after that but it bother him obviously after the game.  Today with the evaluation they found what they found.”

Flyers Head Coach John Stevens

On the injuries:
“We are hopeful with R.J. Umberger he’s not going to be too long.  There is a reason for optimism that he’s not going to be too long and there is reason for optimism that (Joffrey) Lupul is not serious.  But obviously with (Scottie) Upshall its a different story.  He was a guy we were looking forward to starting the year with fresh and healthy and it looks like he is going to be out for a little while.  It’s a situation we were hoping to avoid.  It’s unusual that those kind of blunt force trauma injuries all happened in the same game here, it’s something we are going to have to deal with.”

Where did Upshall get hit?
“He took a pass late in the game there and (Christoph) Schubert stepped on him.  You can see in the video right away that he kind of winced and kind of held his arm and when he came off (the ice) he was in pain.”

Did it happen late in the game?
Stevens:  “Late in the game it was a pass up the middle and he closed on his quickly and he didn’t really have anywhere to go.”

On Joffrey Lupul:
"I think it was down at the far end there.  It was in the second period where he kind of got jammed into the wall.  Again we are hopeful that it is just a sprain and he can continue to play.”

On injuries so early in the season:
”You don’t ever want to lose a player.  Hopefully two of those guys are back really soon.  Now it’s going to create an opportunity for some other guys to step up here.  (Stefan) Ruzicka is back in the fold here, and he has played well and will get the opportunity to play with some world class players tonight and we will see what he can do.  I think it’s important for us, it’s not about individuals it’s about the team game and it’s up the team to pick up the slack that is
opposed here by injured players.”

Philadelphia Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren released the following injury update after Wednesday's practice at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, New Jersey:

“Defenseman Randy Jones sustained a right hip flexor injury and will be out of action through the weekend. We are hoping to get him back on the ice probably next week.”

“Right Wing Joffrey Lupul sustained a left wrist injury and we will know more once he is examined by a specialist tomorrow.”

“Forward R.J. Umberger sustained a broken pinky finger on his left hand. He will require surgery, which will take place tomorrow, and will be out of action for seven to 14 days.”

“Left wing Scottie Upshall sustained a fractured left wrist, which will require surgery. He will have the surgery tomorrow and will be out of action for four to six weeks.”

“Both Umberger and Upshall will be having surgery tomorrow in Baltimore, Maryland by Dr. Tom Graham. Lupul will be examined by Dr. Graham tomorrow and we will have a better feel for where he is after that examination.”

The injury to each of these four players was sustained in the Flyers’ 4-2 loss against the Senators in Ottawa, Ontario on Tuesday night.
