(Voorhees, NJ) – Mario Kempe scored two goals and Adam Henrich contributed three assists to lead the Flyers rookies over the Washington Capitals rookies 5-3 in a scrimmage at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone on Wednesday afternoon that marked the end of the 2007 Flyers Rookie Camp.

Steve Downie, Claude Giroux and David Laliberte also scored for the Flyers, who went 4-for-10 on the power play over the course of the game.

“Mario Kempe looked like he had a good game, and Claude Giroux, coming all the way from the Super Series [with Team Canada], played pretty well,” said Flyers head coach John Stevens.  "I thought Laliberte played pretty well as well.  There were some good efforts out there, and I thought they finished strong, which was nice to see.”

The Flyers led 2-0 after one period on goals by Downie and Giroux, the team’s first round draft picks in 2005 and 2006, respectively.  Washington’s Patrick McNeill scored just under six minutes into the second period, but Kempe’s first of the game revived the two-goal cushion.  Nicklas Backstrom scored for Washington with just under three minutes remaining for a 3-2 Flyers lead at the second break.

But Philadelphia jumped out with two early goals in the third period, the first from Laliberte just 50 seconds in and the second from Kempe at 2:08, both on the man advantage.  Washington’s Sami Lepisto closed out the scoring with a goal at 10:55.

Stevens said he was pleased with the rookie camp.

“I thought it was very well done and well organized,” he said.  “We got the [fitness] testing in for those guys, they got a lot of good instruction on the ice, and it culminates with a game at the end of the week.  It’s a real good preparation for these guys heading into pro camp because it’s going to escalate and the tempo’s going to go up.  They should be comfortable around here in their surroundings and then settle in and hopefully get some experience playing against pros.”

The Flyers open 2007 Training Camp at 9:00 Friday morning at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees.  All sessions are free and open to the public.
