The Spectrum opened in fall of 1967 with the intentions of being home to the Flyers, after becoming an NHL expansion team. The building was the second major sports facility built at the south end of Broad Street in an area previously known as “East League Island Park.”
The building has played host to NHL and NBA games; collegiate tournaments; bull riding and wrestling events; as well as concerts. The final event was held on October 31, 2009, for a Pearl Jam concert.
