Calgary had the chance to tie the game when they were awarded a penalty shot at 6:49 of the third period.
McDonald became the first, and only, player in Flyers history to attempt two penalty shots against the Flyers. He was successful against Flyers goaltender Pete Peeters on October 14, 1979, while he was a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
McDonald's attempt was also the first unsuccessful penalty shot against the Flyers in team history. Flyers goaltenders had allowed a goal on each of the three previous attempts against the club.
