The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have recalled 6''2", 200-pound center R.J. Umberger from the team's American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms. Umberger made his NHL debut on Sunday in Ottawa.
Umberger, 23, has recorded three goals and seven assists for 10 points and eight penalty minutes in eight games for the Phantoms this season. He leads the team in assists, points and plus/minus (+4). Umberger posted seven points (1G,6A) in six preseason games with the Flyers.
In 80 regular season games for the Phantoms last season, Umberger registered 21 goals and 44 assists for 65 points and 36 penalty minutes. He added 10 points (3G,7A) in 21 playoff games as the Phantoms won the Calder Cup. He was named Phantoms' Rookie of the Year after leading the team in points and assists. He was first among AHL rookies in assists, third in points and plus/minus (+19).
The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native was signed as a free agent by the Flyers on June 16, 2004. He did not play during the 2003-04 season after playing three seasons (2000-01 through 2002-03) for Ohio State University. Umberger recorded 58 goals and 71 assists for 129 points and 65 penalty minutes in 112 games for the Buckeyes. He led Ohio State in assists and points in each of his three seasons.
He was originally drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the first round (16th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
