On this date in 2006, The Flyers named Paul Holmgren interim general manger. Holmgren would later have the interim tag removed (on November 11, 2006) to become the team's full time general manager.

Holmgren led the team through a turnaround following that season into one of the most successful stretches in club history. The team has made the playoffs in five consecutive seasons, advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals twice and making the eighth Stanley Cup Final appearance in franchise history in 2009-10.

Prior to that, Holmgren served as assistant general manager to Bob Clarke, who on the same day announced his resignation as the club's GM. Clarke had been GM of the Flyers since the 1994-95 season, and had previously been general manager from 1984-85 season immediately following his retirement as a player.

Overall, Clarke had served 18 years as the general manager for the Flyers where he compiled a 714-443-199 record, including 16 playoff appearances, three Eastern Conference Championships & appearances in the Stanley Cup Final and eight division titles.

On this same day, Ken Hitchcock was relieved of his head coaching duties and John Stevens was named head coach of the Flyers.

ALSO ON THIS DATE:
- The Flyers own an all-time record of 10-9-1-2.

- In 1996, Ron Hextall stopped all 12 shots that he faced to post a 3-0 shutout of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. The Flyers held the Mighty Ducks to one first-period shot, which at the time, tied the team record for fewest shots against in a period. It was the 10th time in team history that it had happened.

- Peter Dineen was traded to the Edmonton Oilers for Bob Hoffmeyer in 1982.

- In 1969, Andre Lacroix recorded a hat trick vs. Toronto Maple Leafs in a 4-3 victory.
