Joe Frazier grew up in Laurel Bay, South Carolina and later settled in Philadelphia, where the PAL (Police Athletic League) turned him into a fighter. Frazier worked in a local slaughterhouse to support himself, but boxing soon became Frazier's career. He won a gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics and later beat Buster Mathis to become the Heavyweight Champion of the World. Marvis Frazier boxed his way to over 50 amateur wins and was considered the best United States amateur heavyweight of his day.
