| Paul Holmgren was the first former Flyer to be named the team's head coach. |
After three seasons as an assistant coach (1985-86 through 1987-88), Holmgren was promoted to head coach, replacing Mike Keenan.
In four seasons as head coach (from 1988-89 to 1991-92), Holmgren compiled a 107-126-31 record. He led the Flyers to the Wales Conference Finals in 1989.
After an 8-14-2 start to the 1991-92 season, Flyers General Manager Russ Farwell replaced Holmgren as head coach with Bill Dineen on December 4, 1991.
