May 24, 1980...NY Islanders Defeat Flyers, 5-4 in overtime

On this date in 1980, the New York Islanders defeated the Flyers in Nassau Veterans' Memorial Coliseum, 5-4 in overtime, in Game Six of the Stanley Cup Finals. With the win, the Islanders won the series, four games to two.

Down three games to one, the Flyers won Game Five, 6-3, at the Spectrum on May 22 to force a Game Six back in New York.

The Flyers opened the scoring in the game with a power play goal by Reggie Leach at 7:21 of the first period. Defenseman Denis Potvin then scored a power play goal for the Islanders to tie the score at 1-1. The Islanders' Duane Sutter and the Flyers' Brian Propp each scored even strength goals in the first period to make the score 2-2 after the first period.

The Islanders outscored the Flyers, 2-0, in the second period to take a 4-2 lead into the second intermission.

The Flyers responded by scoring two goals in the third period (Bob Dailey - 1:47 and John Paddock - 6:02) to tie the score at 4-4 and force overtime.

The Islanders' Bob Nystrom scored his second goal of the game at 7:11 of the first overtime period to give the Islanders the victory, the series win and the Stanley Cup.
