The teams alternated scoring goals throughout the game. The Flyers' Mikael Renberg opened the scoring in the game with a goal at 7:08 of the first period to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second period, the Rangers' Esa Tikkanen scored a shorthanded goal at 1:41 of the third period to tie the score at 1-1. Flyers center Joel Otto was called for a holding penalty at 15:50. While the Flyers were killing the Rangers' power play attempt, John Druce scored a shorthanded goal to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead with less than four minutes to play in the third period (16:47). About a minute after Druce's goal (17:52), Rangers defenseman Brian Leetch scored a goal to tie the game at 2-2.
Rangers defenseman Jeff Beukeboom received a double-minor penalty for high sticking at 18:25. With the Flyers on the power play, Flyers captain Eric Lindros scored a goal at 19:53 to give the Flyers the 3-2 win.
Lindros' power play goal was actually scored with 6.8 seconds left to play in the third period and became the latest game-winning goal in Flyers playoff history.
