May 5, 1974...Flyers Defeat NY Rangers, 4-3

Gary Dornhoefer's two-goal game helped the Flyers reach the Stanley Cup Finals.

On this date in 1974, the Flyers defeated the New York Rangers at the Spectrum, 4-3, in Game Seven of their Semifinal series. With the win, the Flyers advanced to their first Stanley Cup Finals.

The Rangers Bill Fairbairn opened the scoring in the game with an even-strength goal at 13:43 of the first period. About a minute after Fairbairn's goal (14:40), Flyers center Rick MacLeish tied the score at 1-1 by scoring a power play goal while Walt Tkaczuk was in the penalty box serving an elbowing penalty.

The Flyers then outscored the Rangers, 2-0, in the second period on goals by Orest Kindrachuk and Gary Dornhoefer.

Steve Vickers scored a goal at 8:49 of the third period to cut the Flyers lead to just one goal, 3-2. The Flyers responded quickly as Dornhoefer scored his second goal of the game just 12 seconds after Vickers goal (9:01) to make the score 4-2. Pete Stemkowski scored at 14:34 to make the score 4-3, but the Rangers would not score again and the Flyers held on for a 4-3 victory in Game Seven.

Flyers goaltender Bernie Parent stopped 31 of 34 shots faced in the game, including 14 of 15 shots faced in the third period, while Rangers goaltender Eddie Giacomin allowed four goals on 46 Flyers shots.
