April 29, 1989...Flyers Defeat Penguins, 4-1

On this date in 1989, the Flyers defeated the Penguins in Pittsburgh, 4-1, in Game Seven of the Patrick Division Finals.

Brian Propp's goal at 17:41 of the first period gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead. While Propp served a high sticking penalty, Mario Lemieux scored a power play goal at 4:21 of the second period to tie the game at 1-1. As Jeff Chychrun served a crosschecking penalty, Flyers captain Dave Poulin scored a shorthanded goal at 6:57 of the second period to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead. Third-period goals by the Flyers Mike Bullard and Scott Mellanby clinched the Flyers victory.

Goaltender Ken Wregget was named First Star after stopping 39 of 40 Penguins shots. Wregget, who had only played a total of 29:12 minutes during the previous 12 playoff games, was playing in place of an injured Ron Hextall. Hextall had started the previous 12 playoff games for the Flyers.

With the win, the Flyers advanced to the Wale Conference Finals and faced the Montreal Canadiens.

This series is the only time in team history that the Flyers won a series after trailing three games to two.
