April 25, 1989...Penguins Defeat Flyers, 10-7


On this date in 1989, the Flyers lost to the Penguins in Pittsburgh, 10-7, in Game Five of the Patrick Division Finals.

Pittsburgh opened the scoring in the game with four straight first-period goals, including a natural hat trick by Penguins center Mario Lemieux, and led 6-1 after the first period of play.

The Flyers entered the third period trailing by six goals, 9-3. They would come back to cut the deficit to two goals, 9-7, on a goal by Tim Kerr at
17:23. The Flyers were unable to score again and Lemieux scored an

Lemieux finished the game with five goals and three assists for eight points. Lemieux's five goals and eight points tied NHL records for most goals and most points in a playoff game. His four first-period goals tied the NHL record for most goals in a period of a playoff game. His three second-period assists tied the NHL record for most assists in a period of a playoff game.

The victory gave the Penguins a three-games-to-two lead in their best-of-seven-games series, but the Flyers would win the next two games to capture the series and advance to the Wales Conference Finals.
