On this date in 1980, the Flyers defeated the Edmonton Oilers in the Spectrum, 4-3 in overtime, in Game One of their Preliminary Round series.
The Flyers jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by Paul Holmgren and Reggie Leach.
The Oilers responded by scoring two first-period goals to tie the score at 2-2 after the first period.
After a scoreless second period, Edmonton took their first lead of the game on a goal by Don
Wayne Gretzky Murdoch at 8:09 of the third period. With less than
two minutes to play in the third period (18:41), the Flyers' Rick MacLeish scored a goal to tie the game at 3-3.Bobby Clarke scored the game-winning goal at 8:06 of the first overtime period to give the Flyers a 4-3 win and a one-game-to-none lead in the series.
The Flyers outshot the Oilers, 51-17.
In the contest, Edmonton center Wayne Gretzky would record his first NHL playoff goal and his first NHL playoff assist.
The Flyers would win the series, three games to none.
