Ross Lonsberry's second-period goal broke a 1-1 tie and goaltender Bernie Parent held Montreal scoreless over the final two periods to secure the win.
Bobby Clarke posted an assist on Lonsberry's game-winning goal. The assist was his 78th assist of the season, which set an NHL record for most assists in a season by a center. He would finish the season with 89 assists, which is still the team record. The assist also gave Clarke a point in his 13th consecutive game. His streak would reach a team-record 18 games.
The win also ended the Canadiens' 24-game undefeated streak on the road, which is still the NHL record for longest road undefeated streak.
