March 15, 2001...Mark Howe Inducted Into Flyers Hall of Fame
On this date in 2001, Mark Howe was inducted into the Flyers Hall of Fame prior to the Flyers-Minnesota Wild game at the First Union Center.
Howe appeared in 594 games during his 10-year Flyers career (1982-83 through 1991-92 seasons), recording 138 goals and 342 assists for 480 points and 323 penalty minutes. His 480 points as a Flyer rank him first among Flyers defensemen and 13th all-time in Flyers history. He is also first all-time among Flyers defensemen in goals (138) and in assists (342). His 342 assists place him eighth on the Flyers’ All-Time List.
Howe holds the team record for most goals (24 in 1985-86) and most points (82 in 1985-86) in a season by a defenseman. He was the recipient of four Barry Ashbee Trophies as the "most outstanding Flyers defenseman"(1982-83 and 1985-86 through 1987-88) and one Bobby Clarke Trophy as the Flyers’ Most Valuable Player (1985-86). While as a member of the Flyers, Howe was named to three First All-Star Teams (1982-83, 1985-86 and 1986-87) and represented the team in four mid-season All-Star competitions (1982-83, 1985-86 through 1987-88). He captured the Emery Edge Award as the player with the best plus/minus rating for the 1985-86 season after finishing the season with a +85 rating. In his career as a Flyer, Howe was a member of teams that captured four Patrick Division Championships and two Wales Conference Championships (1985 and 1987). In 82 Stanley Cup Playoff games as a Flyer, Howe recorded eight goals and 45 assists for 53 points and 30 penalty minutes. Howe was acquired by the Flyers, along with a third round pick in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft, from the Hartford Whalers in exchange for Ken Linseman, Greg Adams and a first round choice and a third round choice in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft on August 19, 1982.
A native of Detroit, Michigan, Howe played a total of 16 seasons in the NHL with Hartford, the Flyers and Detroit (1979-80 through 1994-95). In 929 career NHL games, Howe registered 197 goals and 545 assists for 742 points and 455 penalty minutes.
