The Flyers' Mark Recchi opened the scoring at 3:59 of the first period to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead. Detroit responded by scoring the next three goals of the game to build a 3-1 second-period lead. Goals by Eric Lindros and Greg Paslawski tied the game at 3-3 as the teams enter the second intermission. The Red Wings scored two late third-period goals to lead 5-3 with under three minutes to play in the game. Recchi scored again at 17:18 to make the score 5-4. With their goaltender pulled from the ice for the extra skater, left wing Brent Fedyk scored at 19:59.2 of the third period to tie the score at 5-5.
