“Obviously a player of Mats Sundin’s stature…he’s been a tremendous player for a long time,” said Holmgren. “He’s a free agent, and we’ve made inquiries as to his status. We don’t know whether he’s going to play or not. I think Mats is still trying to decide that in his own timeframe. But, if he wants to play, we’d certainly have an interest in seeing if we could fit him in.”
Fitting Sundin in under the salary cap would be the tricky part for Holmgren, should it come to that. The general manager did say, however, that he would not mortgage the future for a short term addition.
“We wouldn’t want to do anything to disrupt our long term plans here,” he said. “Other than kicking the tires and sticking our toe in the water, that's all we're doing right now.
“All we’re doing is putting our name in the hat. If he decides to play, then we would have interest.”
In 1305 career NHL games with Toronto and the Quebec Nordiques, Sundin, 37, has 555 goals and 766 assists for 1321 points and 1065 penalty minutes.
