In 1999, the Flyers defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-2, marking Head Coach Roger Neilson’s 424th win in his NHL coaching career, passing Jack Adams for 9th all time in NHL’s All-Time Coaching Wins List.
Neilson began his tenure as head coach of the Flyers midway through the 1997-98 season, until 2000 posting a 76-52-32 record, reaching the playoffs in each of his three seasons. In 1999-2000 he led the team to first place in the Eastern Conference, as well as coached the 2000 Eastern Conference All Stars.
Neilson was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in November of 2002. He compiled an overall coaching record of 460-381-159. He passed away at the age of 69 after a battle with bone and skin cancer on June 21, 2003.
