Flyers Captain Claude Giroux is one step closer to playing in the Olympics.
Team Canada announced its orientation camp roster Monday and Giroux was one of 25 forwards invited to participate.
The camp will take place Aug. 25-28 in Calgary.
Giroux, 25, is a favorite to land one of the final spots on the roster to try and help Canada repeat as Olympic Gold Medalists in Sochi, Russia in February.
The Hearst, Ontario native has played for Canada before at the junior level, but never for the men’s national team.
Team Canada announced a 47-man roster that was invited to the camp. They will have to trim that roster to 23 for the Olympics.
One other Flyers connection from the past on Team Canada is assistant coach Ken Hitchcock, now head coach of the St. Louis Blues.
Team Russia also announced their preliminary roster and it featured former Flyers and current Vezina Trophy-winning goalie Sergei Bobrovsky among five goalies invited. Conspicuous by his absence on the list is former Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov.
Team USA will announce its preliminary roster tomorrow.
Flyers associate captain Kimmo Timonen was named as one of 16 defensemen to the Finnish preliminary roster last month, while Nicklas Grossmann and Erik Gustafsson were invited to compete for a spot on Sweden's blueline.
